How We Plan And Schedule Our Instagram In Advance Using The Planoly App
(This post contains affiliate links. However, we never recommend any products or services that we don’t use and love ourselves!)
Let’s play a game. Would you rather…
1. Scramble last minute to find an Instagram worthy photo and perfect caption to pair it with, finally post it, and then feel super exhausted from all of that unnecessary panic.
2. Have all of your beautiful photos matched with captions and hashtags, all scheduled and ready to post automatically so you can spend your time engaging with your tribe?
We’re going to take a shot in the dark and say you’d rather have option 2. But planning in advance sounds time consuming, perhaps even confusing, and impossible to achieve at times. What if we told you that it’s totally possible to plan and schedule your Instagram in advance and have it ready to automatically post for you? You can save time and spend it on more important tasks like engaging with your amazing followers. Sound good? We’re going to show you today how we do just that with our favorite app Planoly!
Some of our favorite, super awesome Planoly features that we utilize on the regular:
Unscheduled, Scheduled, and All tabs. These are amazing because you have the ability to see your feed in 3 different stages. ‘Unscheduled’ allows you to view only your posts that you’re currently planning and have yet to schedule into your feed so you can rearrange them until you finally make up your mind. ‘Scheduled’ allows you to view only the currently scheduled posts you currently to you can see everything that’s ready to go in your queue. ‘All’ allows you to view 18 of your recent squares already posted to your feed + your scheduled posts + your unschedule posts that you’re still arranging. This means you can see everything together as a whole so you can make sure certain images and colors are being used properly as well as making sure certain images aren’t be posted to close to one another or too often. Think of it as a “bird’s eye view”.
Placeholder and Swap. So basically, when you sure you want a certain post in a certain spot, but you have no clue what image (or maybe even what caption) you want just yet, you can upload a ‘placeholder’ image. This is a colored square that acts just like a regular uploaded image into Planoly. You can label it, caption it, etc. etc. Then once you've found that perfect IG worthy image, all you have to do is click and swap it to your photo of choice.
Hashtags. As you begin typing hashtags, Planoly offers hashtag suggestions based on what you’ve typed. Once you’ve found the perfect hashtag types, you can create your own ‘hashtag sets’ and save them into groups to later add them to your future posts.
Autoposting. Yup, you read that right. And honestly, holy bananas batman, this is the absolutely best feature EVER! Never worry about remembering to post again, isn’t that a dream?!
Desktop scheduling. For when you just can’t get to the phone right now, Planoly’s desktop scheduling feature has made planning our Instagram 1000000x easier!
Here’s how we make our Instagram feed magic happen…
So before we even touch Planoly, we first plan out our content ideas in AirTable. We have specific days for blog posts (Tuesdays and Thursdays) as well as specific category days to keep our topics and content on brand always. We typically have a collection of caption ideas based on certain topics, while others days we have things coming to us on the fly, so we like to utilize both options and don’t try to be too strict in order to keep thing fun and creative.
plan + position
Now we move onto planning within the Planoly app. We start with our designated blog posts days and import those first. We do this by either uploading an image we already have in mind, or utilizing the ‘Placeholder’ feature which allows you to upload a blank colored box with a short label for you to hold the place of that post. You can later swap the box for an image of your choice without losing your place in your feed. Easy as pie! (mmm pie)
When it comes to the photos in our Instagram feed, we enjoy pairing images that match the topic of our caption, but sometime’s that’s not always feasible so we do like to add and arrange our on-brand collection of images based on how they look when interacting with the rest of our feed. We do this by utilizing the ‘All’ tab feature so we can see everything we’ve uploaded and scheduled plus current squares from our Instagram feed. If anything needs moving we can just easily drag it to another area where we think it would look better. Drag and drop for the win!
prep + schedule + autopost
Now it’s on to our last steps in Planoly! We prep our Instagram posts by making sure our captions are complete, images are set, hashtags are pasted, direct links are added, any specific accounts are properly tagged, locations are marked, schedules are set to the appropriate day and time, and autopost is turned ON so when the schedule time comes, it uploads and pots everything right to your feed automatically. BOOM!
If you’re not planning, scheduling, and autoposting your Instagram account then what the heck are you doing?! Wasting time is what you’re doing (let’s be honest here). Don’t waste time, let the Planoly app take care of the technical stuff, you just focus on engaging, because that’s the most important part of social media. You can’t have “social media” without the word “social” right?
The Planoly app has been a major part of our social media strategy. Aside from their amazing features, they constantly offer tons of free social media tips plus amazing helpful downloads to help you plan, strategize, and grow your Instagram. Oh, and one of our favorite parts is that they offer a FREE plan that allows you to post up to 30x a month FOREVER! But, if you need more than that (like us), you can choose paid plans starting at only $7/mo for unlimited uploads and more!
